Our story

Crystal Collapse is the first published game by The Lion’s Tower. Going back to 2021, Max Witt had seen and loved the Kingdom of Talarius miniature range (inspired by Final Fantasy 4) sculpted by Dan Kelly of The Lion’s Tower, and pitched the idea of a tabletop game using the principles of Tactical JRPGS. An idea that sparked a friendship and began the development of Crystal Collapse!

We wanted a game that had the JRPG visuals, and could bring tactical gameplay elements from games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre.

Our approach

The Game

We set out to make a game that is simple enough that we could teach our young children to play it in just a few turns, but that had layers of complexity and strategic potential so that we could still be surprised by players in tournaments! We are pleased to say that we believe we have achieved our goal!

The Game uses a 40mm square grid with various elevations and terrain items to create a strategically laid out battlefield. The position and facing of your characters is of critical importance, not only in executing your own actions, but defending against your opponents.

We have taken the focus of the game away from “Kill everything in sight”, firmly towards “complete your objectives”. With a strong narrative running through the scenarios, this will eventually develop into a consistent and continuous story that will be developed and evolved with the input of the player base.

The Miniatures

We decided that a game with a small model count and unique aesthetic could afford to deviate from scale norms, so we opted for 40mm scale (from the bottom of the foot to the eye line of a standard human). This means that we can make miniatures that are an absolute delight to paint and that really stand out on the tabletop. Only having 4 a side means that players can really spend some time and attention on their party, and we all know that painted models are more fun to play with!

We’re offering all of the miniatures in high quality resin with some supplementary STL downloads for 3d printing at home for some of our terrain pieces, bases and detail accessories..
